  • South Haven Lighthouse

    South Haven Lighthouse

Final Destination - South Haven for Sunset. This is about a half hour BEFORE sunset. The day started and ended at the latitude of 41.xxx and offers two views of the same Great Lake: Lake Michigan. Along the way, we experienced clear skies to cloudy skies and freezing rain, which made the end of day all the more challenging. 18 hours, three locations, and great friends to share it with, made the experience priceless.

  • Sunlit Lighthouse and Pier head

    Sunlit Lighthouse and Pier head

From the second of two glorious days photographing around the Midwest. Patience pays off when watching the sunlight paint beams of light across the frozen shoreline. During our time in South Haven, the sun would peak out from behind the clouds and cast bright light on various parts of the lake. This one was special as it lit both the lighthouse and pier head while the rest lay in shadow.

During our time at the lighthouse of South Haven, the sun danced in and out of the clouds, sometimes castings broad beams of light across the frozen shores of Lake Michigan.

    Ice Rails in the Sun

The east side of Lake Michigan lays dormant in deep freeze, the waves of recent past activity suspended in time, as the sun slowly sets for another day. It was cold, but beautiful in Saint Josephs Sunday.

  • Little Sable Point Lighthouse

    Little Sable Point Lighthouse

The 2nd stop on our Sunrise to Sunset tour, This is a bit out of sequence but I was anxious to see this image taken from the north side of the lighthouse. This is the furthest destination for us on todays trip, well worth the time. 107' tall red brick lighthouse on the east shore of Lake Michigan.

  • Sunset Grand Haven

    Sunset Grand Haven

Our 2nd year of doing a Sunrise to Sunset trip, this was the last destination we could make before sunset. The ride down from Little Sable was challenged by pockets of lake effect snow, some intense enough to hamper driving. As we pulled in the parking lot, this looked quite hopeless. Still, we decided to grab our gear and hike out to the catwalk. Good thing we did. While it was still sleeting around us, the Sun made a brief appearance on the western shore of Lake Michigan, before disappearing for the night. It was a matter of wipe the lens - fire the shutter, wipe the lens, fire the shutter.....and hope at least one image was in focus.

    Little Sable Lighthouse

Our 2nd year of doing a Sunrse to Sunset trip, had myself, Mark Baldwin and Jonathan Robson going farther for the east side of Lake Michigan's Sunset phase than we have in the past. That meant making it to only 3 locations at most. A little over 5 hours drive from Openlands Lakeshore Preserve, rewarded us with a 107 foot tall red brick lighthouse and dunes mixed with snow and sand, creating beautiful textures. Tiring trip, but worth the effort. Added bonus: we got to break in Jonathans new SUV with a nice 500+ miles ride. Do check out Mark and Jonathans images too - good stuff !
